The Cabinet Secretary for Water, Sanitation and Irrigation, Eng. Eric Mugaa, on 5th and 6th February 2026, led a high-level Government delegation to Nakuru and Baringo counties to oversee critical water sector initiatives aimed at strengthening water security and improving service delivery in the Central Rift Valley.

The visit began in Nakuru County, where the Central Rift Valley Water Works Development Agency (CRVWWDA) hosted the Cabinet Secretary and the Principal Secretary for Water and Sanitation, Mr. Julius Korir, CBS, for the flag-off and handover of critical operational equipment. The equipment, procured under the Malaba Water Supply and Sanitation Project and funded by the Government of Kenya and the African Development Bank (AfDB), was handed over to the Lake Victoria North Water Works Development Agency for use by the Busia Water and Sewerage Services Company (BUWASCO). It included one 7-tonne truck, a potable water tanker, a sewage suction tanker, and four motorcycles, intended to enhance operational efficiency, emergency response, and sustainable service delivery. In addition, two motorcycles procured under the Suswa Water Supply Project were handed over to the Narok Water and Sewerage Company to improve access, response time, and vandalism control along the Suswa pipeline corridor.

Later in the morning, the Cabinet Secretary witnessed the transfer of bulk water from Baringo to Nakuru, a strategic intervention designed to augment water supply in Nakuru while promoting sustainable inter-county water resource sharing. Speaking during the exercise, Eng. Mugaa emphasized the significance of shared water infrastructure in supporting national development.
“The transfer of bulk water from Baringo to Nakuru and the operational support to water service providers demonstrate the Government’s commitment to regional cooperation, efficiency, and sustainable water management,” said Eng. Mugaa.
In the afternoon of the first day, the Cabinet Secretary handed over additional operational equipment to Chemususu Water and Sanitation Company (CHEWASCO). The support package included eight motorcycles, a JCB backhoe, a mobile workshop, and over 200 metres of surveying tools, aimed at strengthening field operations, maintenance capacity, and overall service delivery.

On day two of the tour, the Cabinet Secretary proceeded to the headquarters of Baringo County-Kabarnet Town to inspect the ongoing Kirandich Phase II Water Supply and Sanitation Project, a flagship initiative expected to significantly expand water supply coverage in Baringo Central and Baringo North sub-counties, while improving sanitation services within Kabarnet Town. Upon completion, the project will provide reliable water services to tens of thousands of residents.
“Kirandich Phase II is a transformative project for Baringo County. We are encouraged by the progress achieved and will continue to ensure timely completion in line with approved quality standards,” said Eng. Mugaa.

The Cabinet Secretary was accompanied by the Principal Secretary for Water and Sanitation, the CRVWWDA Chairman, Hon. Mathenge Ndiritu, CRVWWDA Board Director, Dr. Daniel Tuitoek, and the Chief Executive Officer, CPA Douglas Murei, who provided detailed briefings on project implementation, timelines, and anticipated impact. Reaffirming the Agency’s mandate, the CRVWWDA CEO emphasized the focus on quality, accountability and sustainability in delivering water infrastructure projects.

“ The Agency remains committed to implementing water projects to the highest standards of quality and transparency, in line with our mandate to enhance water access and build resilience for communities,” said CPA Murei.
The visit also brought together legislators from the affected constituencies and wards, as well as the Deputy Governors of Baringo and Nakuru counties, Mr. Felix Kipng’ok and Mr. David Kones, respectively, highlighting strong collaboration between the National and County Governments in advancing water and sanitation development.
The two-day inspection tour concluded with a confirmation of the Parent Ministry’s support for continued investment in water infrastructure, positioning water as a key enabler of socio-economic development and improved service delivery in the region.
The Agency on 18th November,2025 took another significant step towards strengthening water supply infrastructure in Nakuru County following the signing of the contract for Lot II of the Lake Nakuru Biodiversity Conservation Project.

led by Chief Executive Officer CPA Douglas Murei and witnessed by senior Agency officials, including Mr. William Sakuda, Manager – Supply Chain Management, alongside other technical and procurement representatives, the contract signing by the Agency, marked a key milestone in the implementation of the multi-component project aimed at improving water security while supporting environmental conservation around Lake Nakuru.
Lot II, which will be implemented under CRVWWDA’s stewardship, focuses on major investments to expand and enhance Nakuru’s water supply network. The scope of works includes the drilling of twelve new boreholes, optimization of four existing wellfields, upgrading of the Mereroni River intake, and the construction of a 10,000 cubic metre water storage reservoir. In addition, the project will involve the installation of three transmission mains covering approximately 27 kilometres, significantly improving water conveyance capacity.
Once completed, these interventions are expected to substantially increase water production and enhance supply reliability for residents of Nakuru and its surrounding areas. The project is designed to address both current shortages and future demand arising from rapid urban growth and population increase within the Nakuru metropolitan region.
The Lake Nakuru Biodiversity Conservation Project is jointly financed by the Government of Kenya and KfW Development Bank, reflecting a strong partnership in promoting sustainable water resource development while safeguarding the Lake Nakuru ecosystem.
The signing of the Lot II contract follows closely on the successful execution of the Lot I contract which focuses on the upgrade and expansion of the Njoro Wastewater Treatment Plant. Together, the two project components form an integrated approach to improving water supply and sanitation services, while supporting biodiversity conservation efforts within the Lake Nakuru basin.

On 22nd December 2025, the Central Rift Valley Water Works Development Agency (CRVWWDA) participated in the Kimalel Goat Auction and Cultural Festival held in Baringo County, a flagship community forum that integrates cultural heritage, pastoral livelihoods, and development dialogue in arid and semi-arid lands (ASALs).

The event was presided over by H.E. Dr. William Samoei Ruto, C.G.H., President of the Republic of Kenya, and was attended by Governors, Members of Parliament, Principal Secretaries, and other senior government officials. During the festival, the President toured the goat auction and cultural exhibitions, emphasizing the strong interdependence between sustainable livelihoods, water security, and climate resilience, particularly in water-stressed regions.
CRVWWDA’s participation was driven by the Agency’s commitment to community-centered project implementation and stakeholder engagement, recognizing that the success and sustainability of bulk water infrastructure projects are closely linked to local livelihoods and community ownership. The festival provided a strategic platform for the Agency to engage directly with beneficiary communities, county leadership, and national policymakers, while reinforcing the role of water infrastructure as an enabler of economic activities such as livestock production and agri-pastoral livelihoods.

The Agency reaffirmed its long-standing partnership with the County Government of Baringo, where it is implementing key bulk water supply projects aimed at improving access to reliable water services and strengthening regional resilience. These include the Chemususu Water Supply Project, Kambi Ya Samaki Water Supply Project and Kirandich Water Supply Project, among others. Collectively, these projects are designed to support domestic water needs, enhance livestock productivity, reduce resource-based conflicts, and catalyze socio-economic development across the county.
In line with its approach of complementing infrastructure delivery with direct community empowerment, CRVWWDA, led by the Chief Executive Officer, CPA Douglas Murei, actively participated in the goat auction by purchasing several goats. This gesture not only contributed to boosting household incomes but also demonstrated the practical link between improved water access and enhanced livestock value chains, reinforcing the relevance of the Agency’s projects to everyday community livelihoods.

Through such engagements, CRVWWDA continues to demonstrate a holistic and inclusive approach to water development, one that goes beyond infrastructure provision to strengthen partnerships, build community trust, enhance project acceptance, and ensure the long-term sustainability of water investments across the Central Rift Valley region.
